Off-season training doesn’t have to be complicated or overwhelming. In fact, the most effective off season soccer drills are simple, repetitive, and easy to do at home — no field or fancy equipment needed.
Here are the 5 drills we use with our kids (ages 7 and 11) to stay sharp, build confidence, and keep touches consistent all winter long.
Why These Off Season Soccer Drills Actually Work
These drills work because they focus on:
• repetition
• consistency
• real-game touches
• movement
• confidence
• FUN
No complicated cones.
No equipment.
No pressure.
Just simple drills done well.
1. Wall Passes For First Touch + Consistency
This is the simplest, most effective drill kids can do — even in a driveway or garage.
All you need is:
• a soccer ball
• a wall
• 2–3 minutes
How it works:
Pass → receive → repeat.
Right foot, left foot, alternating touches.
Why it works:
• First touch
• Ball control
• Speed of play
• Confidence
• Repetition
Coach Grandpa Tip:
“Great players repeat the same drill for YEARS — that’s how their touch becomes automatic.”
2. Random Cone Weave to Train the Unexpected
Instead of perfect cone lines, we scatter cones everywhere and let the kids weave freely.
Why?
No game looks perfect.
Kids need chaotic touches, not choreographed ones.
Benefits:
• Agility
• Change of direction
• Decision-making
• Balance
• Real-game reactions
This is one of Coach Grandpa’s signature drills — and it's incredibly fun.
3. Shooting + Sprint Recovery (“Make Misses Fun”)
One of our kids’ FAVORITE drills.
How it works:
Player dribbles or receives a pass
Takes a shot
If they miss, they immediately SPRINT to chase the ball
Reset and repeat
Why it works:
• Reaction speed
• Recovery effort
• Transition moments
• Endurance
And kids love the “race after the miss” — it turns conditioning into a game.
4. 1v1 Sibling Battles
If you have more than one kid, you have the BEST training partners.
1v1 helps with:
• speed
• dribbling
• defending
• competitiveness
• creativity
• confidence
Try:
• loose ball races
• first-to-score
• shadow defending
• small goal 1v1
Nothing builds grit and joy like siblings battling it out.
5. Daily Juggling Challenge
Juggling teaches:
• touch
• rhythm
• balance
• coordination
• focus
• consistency
Our 7-year-old’s goal this year is to juggle every day — his current record is 26 touches. Small daily efforts turn into BIG progress over time.
Coach Grandpa says:
“You don’t rise to pressure — you rise to your habits.”
